4- If you like Pina Coladas

I recall a time when there was a problem in a group of friends of mine. One of the people in the group was acting negatively and being mean to others. After a while of this nonsense, I had to confront her because I could not see this bad situation grow into an even worse one. Overall, it was a positive and negative experience. I learned many things dealing with a person who really just needs a friend, or help. Although she was being rude, I could see she was having problems. Unfortunately, I could not help her because we were not the best of friends, but she did get her act together and started treating everyone nicely. It was positive because of how much a learned in a group dynamic but negative because it did cause unwanted stress among the group.
I can use this experience by looking at the other point of view. This way, I can understand a situation better and where my mentee is coming from. After all is said and done with my mentee, I want to make sure they are on the right track and we leave the meeting feeling positive. I want to approach problems from and understanding and fixing stand point.

I can relate to friend conflicts. Many of my friendships in the past have failed because of two people in the group getting into an argument. It is difficult to mend the relationship between the two individuals because you don't want to pick sides but you also don't want to just sit and watch their friendship fall apart. It is a tough situation. Having a positive relationship with your mentee will be very important and having this situation in the back of your mind will help so there will be no conflicts between you and your mentee.
ReplyDeleteCelena,
ReplyDeleteIt is great to always try to put yourself in your mentees shoes to understand where they are coming from. At times, it will be difficult to understand where your mentee stands because of the different prospective on the situation and as much as we want to help and be their for our mentees, sometimes the only good we could be helpful with is to give them some words of encouragement.
