This article has some great and some not so great things to say. The article is about white privilege. To answer the question about whether it is privilege or not... its in the title. However, some debate whether it's a real thing or not. I 100% know its real. I love how the article starts out by saying, "It’s not about what whites get. It’s about what blacks don’t." A lot of times people get defensive regarding privilege, but it is something you're born with. White people are born with white privilege; its something they cant change. What they can change what they do with this privilege. This article talks about the new hashtag #CrimingWhileWhite asking white people to reflect on this issue.
I agree with you about white privilege existing and privileged people getting defensive. To me, people don't understand that the only people who have all the privilege are the people at the very top, but white individuals still have privilege. They do not have as much privilege as those on top but they are still born with a large amount of privilege. People of color have substantially less privilege. People also get defense because they see it as a contest of struggle, meaning that if they struggled it means they didn't have privilege which is not true. They still have privilege.
ReplyDeleteIt's ridiculous to think that white people, as mentioned in your blog, get away with crimes without even going through what other people go through.I agree with you Julia because even though those with more privilege do struggle, they still get where they want. If minorities struggle the same, they are still far from where they want to get.
