My SSS advisor has been a major advocate for me and my college career by challenging me to become the student leader that I am today. One of the biggest challenges that she presented me with was to become a board member of Louie's Cupboard. I remember coming to the board meeting just to see how things worked at the beginning of my sophomore year. There was the Procurement position open and the board members simply asked if I wanted it. I hesitated after a moment, but as soon I looked at Wendy I knew I could and agreed to take it. The expression on her face told me that she had confidence in me, so why didn't I?
This was definitely a positive experience for me because I learned how to hold a position role. Now I am a Co-Chair for Louie's Cupboard, which would have terrified me if I had never taken the Procurement position. I became more confident in my leadership ability and further developed my communication and teamwork skills.
I will use this experience to help build my mentee's confidence in themselves and their capabilities by relating to them. Also, I will make sure it is positive by not pushing them too far and ask for clarification.
