5- Privilege!

Privilege is something that people do not think  about in our everyday society. People associate the word "privilege" with a negative connotation and are afraid of it instead of acknowledging the privilege and changing it. What stood out to me the most from the video on Privilege was that the the people in the front did not have to think about whether or not they would be able to shoot their paper in the basket. Just like in real life, people who don't have to think about their privilege, are privileged themselves. For the upperclassmen and lower class men example from the video, I agree that people who have a lot of money don't have to worry about not having to pay for things such as others who have less money and are poor. Also, from the bike video I could relate to the " white" privilege and how that plays a dominant role in our society. After learning more about privilege and those who don't have certain privileges, I realized that I have the privilege of not having to worry about much and fitting into the norm of society. I liked the connection to riding a bike to how color people deal with privilege everyday. When you are riding a bike and following the rules of the road, you face abuse and hardship trying to get to your destination just like how color people struggle to face different challenges throughout their life compared to white people. The article that I chose for Privilege is called: " 10 Examples of Straight Privilege" by Erin Tatum, goes into detail on how heterosexuals have the privilege of not having to " come out" to their family and to society. In the article one of the examples is that at birth, your orientation is naturalized and the idea of changing your gender is unacceptable. Also the idea of heteronormativity  is established before kids get into diapers and is already assumed in society and accepted by others. On the other hand, homosexuals and people who change their gender or sex at birth struggle to deal with how to "come out" to their family and survive in the functioning society.  This article showed that our society already has a structured and set standards in society and anyone that falls out of the norm is discriminated against for the worst. I believe that in order to have a successful society where people accept and acknowledge privileges , we need to stop discriminating against others who are different and learn to accept people as unique individuals with their differences.

  1. Hey Alayna! I love the article you chose because the funny thing is, being heterosexual isn't really 'normal', it's just common, and there are people whose gender identity and sexual orientation are very different from the current binary. This is applied to most other privileges as well- that they are just common, not 'normal', but most people see them as the majority/dominant narrative so they perceive them as normal. For this case, most people shouldn't assume another's gender identity or sexual orientation, and accept there there are more than two genders and more than two orientations. I feel like our generation is doing a good job at starting this trend/school of thought, so the future looks hopeful!
