Career Development and professional training

I'm going to recommend two resources that NAU provides free of charge to students. One is internally run by NAU, and the other is a service provided by a 3rd party that NAU pays for so that each student can have quick and easy access to it.

Maybe this is just because my senior year is fast approaching, but it's never too early for incoming freshmen, like our mentees, to look at NAU's Career Development center. Their mission is to help current students and alumni enrich their ability to compete in a difficult global career market through individual career advising, group events, and connecting students with immediate job opportunities with recruiting events. Most students know what a resume is, but many don't know how to properly compile one, and even more don't even understand the purpose or importance of a cover letter. NAU Career Development helps students with all of these things and a lot more. Plus, they always encourage students to continually build their resumes, and stretch their abilities, which brings me to my next resource.

NAU pays a lump-sum fee to a website called Lynda.com so that each of its students can access their online premium professional software training courses. That may be a mouthful, but it's a powerful resource that can quickly enrich any student's resume. It has in-depth, comprehensive training courses for software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe's Creative Cloud Suite, Autodesk Computer Animation software and many others. I've personally used the service a great deal, and I've exponentially increased my ability to effectively use several of the software suites Lynda covers. In a business world that depends so heavily on professional programs like these, the training that this site offers is, dead seriously, priceless. This info isn't just for mentees, but for mentors as well.

You'll be prompted to log into NAU's CAS, but then you'll be transferred immediately to the wonderful world of software and technology.

  1. Hello Jeredyn,

I am pretty thankful you talked about Career Development here at NAU because I have been wondering about it for some time now. I have also wanted to know about LYNDA, so I'm really glad I read your post.
