4- Challenges

I think everyone has been challenged at least once. Last semester my peer mentor had challenged me to study for 20 hours a week and go to recitation and an SI session for two of my classes and go to tutoring, granted that is what I had heard from some miscommunication. She meant that the 20 hours included SI and Recitation and tutoring. That really made me tired and stressed out and I did not like or appreciate my mentor because of it. That felt like a negative challenge because of lack of communication and my mentor could have communicated better with me during our meeting and the email reminder. She did fix the error when she realized there was a communication problem which did make it more positive. From this experience, with my mentee, I'm going to work on my communication skills both in person and over email so that this type of situation does not occur between my mentee and I. To make it positive, I'm going to make sure my words and expectations are clear and that they understand and there is not miscommunication and added stress.

  1. I bet the miscommunication really got in between you and your relationship with your peer mentor. Noticing how this is possible, I will also pay attention to how I communicate with my mentees. I'm glad that it all got resolved though! I also hope you did well on your classes as a result of all your studying. (:

  2. I could definitely see where your frustration came from! Communication is definitely a big deal especially when we are supposed to be challenging someone. Coming off the wrong way could really turn off our mentees. I'm glad you were able to see it as a positive thing in the end.
