In the video, the thing that stood out to me the most, and is an important part of privilege, is the people in the front of the room who were closer to the bin not recognizing they had privilege, but rather just being able to focus on reaching their goal. This puts the people at the front at an advantage, and forces the people in the back to have a more challenging process of reaching their goal. The people in the back of the room were able to see there was a disadvantage with the way things were set up, and the reason I loved this one the most is because it is very much the case in real life. Like those in the back of the room, in real life it is usually minorities who are placed farther from being able to reach their goals; the playing field is nowhere near even. When one has privilege, it is often something they do not have to think about having because they haven't experienced anything else. Those who are part of the minority can usually see privilege.
Relating this to recent events, there have been countless times where white youths who are arrested for something, get attributed with a mental illness or troubled home life, whereas black youths are attributed with gang affiliation and killed over something very minor. More often than not, White Privilege gives an unfair advantage to them. This system in place which benefits white americans. The linked article shows a few sample headlines of white vs. black people. Oftentimes there is a major discrepancy in what the media decides to portray in each case, and it is so important for ugly stereotypes to be put down. Since media is where everyone gets their information, it is important to tell the truth, whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Sierra,
ReplyDeleteI really loved the title of your post, I believe it fits the topic perfectly. I also feel like you made a great point in saying that some individuals don't even realize that they are privileged compared to others. I wonder if everyone had the same understanding about privilege, things would be different?
I think your example was super relevant to today's world. The privelige that exists in the criminal justice system is pretty darn shocking even given that life isn't ever fair. Hopefully in the future the media will become more equal.
ReplyDeletethe title of your post was really creative and defintely fit. I also believe your thoughts on the video and what was important was very similar to what i thought too!
