My thought from the video was that the people in the back of the classroom did have a disadvantage in making their paper into the trash can. It shows that not everyone has the same privilege from the students that were sitting in the front. My thoughts from the article was that some people can be cruel and disrespectful to people on bikes. I see it happen now the people in the car believe they have more privilege than those that are on a bike. Recently in my hometown they put bike lanes and when I am driving I see other cars slowly moving across the bike lane but luckily there is no bikers at the time. From talking to those who do ride bikes in my town have said they feel safer riding on the sidewalk.
The article I looked up is called The Origins of "Privilege". This article was about a white woman who was always asked about her own privilege and then she gave examples about privilege. She now works on a project called the "Seed Project" where she talks about privilege and the advantages and disadvantages about it. She talked about her experience throughout her life. The one I like is when she says "what do I have that I did not earn? It was like a prayer. The first one I thought of was I can, if I wish, arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time". I like it because things were not just handed over to her she worked hard for what she had. So she has some good concepts of what privilege is and how people can learn from the examples she provides.

From the video I also felt the people in the back were at a disadvantage. I also like the message the video was trying to get across about how the people in the front should serve as advocates for the people in the back. Maybe someone in the front should get up and allow someone from the back to sit in their seat while they attempt to make the shot to make it more fair. It is up to everyone as individuals to not be afraid to stand up and speak up for those who are not being treated fairly or being given an equal opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the importance of having a bike lane but also sidewalks available to bike riders. I ride my bike or walk to my destinations and when I ride my bike, I try to ride on the sidewalk as much as possible because a lot of the time cars are not as careful as they should be. Privilege is not always given to white people. I am mixed white and Hispanic and feel that I get more privilege from being Hispanic because employers and school are trying to more diverse. It also helps to be Hispanic because I am bilingual and plan to pass it on, as it is a great advantage in the workplace or socially to know more than one language.
