Challenges

Throughout my college years I have been challenged by so many things already but the biggest challenge for me is maintaining my full ride scholarship at NAU. The school offered me and gave me this scholarship because I work hard academically for it but they have challenged me this year with making sure that I maintain all the requirements to be able to keep it. The stress that has come along with this has really affected my behavior because its put a lot of stress and depression on me. I have worked hard and know in the end its for the better to be able to live my dreams and work hard to keep this but I have been definitely been tested by it and sometimes my actions and behavior play a huge role in succeeding or not in this.
This experience can be positive and negative because the positive outlook is that I got a full ride to be able to go to school and get most of it paid for but the negative aspect to this is making sure I can maintain the requirements necessary to keep it. I have to get a 3.0 GPA or higher, maintain 30 credits at least per year, and get all A's and B's.
Using this experience with my men-tee and having a challenging conversation with them and making sure that I keep it positive can be hard but I know that its possible. Some advice if this situation ever does occur that I make sure that they know that you are always here for them and that NAU provides a lot of resources to get help and to make sure you pass. Also the people who you surround yourself with has a huge factor in this too because they affect your actions and behavior. I would also remind them too how smart they are and how much you believe in them and know that you believe that they can do this and that they will succeed. These are key points that I would definitely make sure in regards if this experience every occurred with me and my men-tee.

  1. In my opinion that is the best advice you can give your mentee. Everyone is capable of doing anything they set their mind to. The question is how willing are you to be motivated and positive throughout it all. You keep going and do what you know best. Keep up the great work and you too will come over this challenge.

  2. I understand that scholarships are tough stuff, especially if you drop below you cannot get that back. I think your advice is spot on and a lot of students could easily relate to your story to make the best of their situation. Keep it up, you deserve the scholarship!

  3. I know what you mean about the situation with your scholarship. I have the same experience and have shared it with my mentees and its definitely nice to try and relate events back with them so that they know that they are not the only ones who going through it. It's not something that they have to do alone because we are all here to help them!
