My thoughts about the Privilege video was that it seemed unfair for the students in the back to make the paper shot into the trash can because they had the disadvantage of being in the back unlike the students who were seated in the first row who had a better chance of making the shot. My thoughts on the bike article is that I thought that people driving cars felt more privileged than those riding bikes or even pedestrians walking across the street. I thought it was strange because people in a car are going to feel like they have the privileged over everybody else but the minute that person is in the bike lane then they feel like they are the privileged ones now and get mad at the people in the cars. I think that pedestrians walking and the bike line should always be more privileged then the cars because they are the ones that are at greater risk for getting hurt or killed.
In the article that I chose a man named "Jon-Ming-You" wants to become a judge in the United States federal court but at age 35 and working in grocery store his whole life Obama has decided to extend certain privileges to the undocumented. This man has had a hard time throughout his whole life because he is from South Korea but left at age one and took a long time to get citizenship and get a real job that he wanted. The consequences for this was good because they are trying to change this and helped the undocumented immigration. It was hard because even though he felt lucky there was still 300,000 other people who weren't and is something that is still a work in progress.

I agree with you about the bike situation they should have more of a privilege. That is is true that each time they go into the bike lanes they have a great chance of getting hurt. It sounds like the article you found was very interesting and touching. It amazing how some people decide to do something to better themselves and it is sad when some people are not given the chance to do so.
ReplyDeleteYour thoughts on the article are really interesting because it shows the ways in which we all feel someone else has more privilege than us. Also, I like that you chose this article because I feel like it shows the ways in which we are trying to improve this notion of privilege and underprivileged for people that are of a different race, ethnicity, or gender. Do you think that notions of privilege could ever cease to exist? I feel that there will always be some sense of privilege in a society because it is human nature to feel jealous of something we don't or can't have and as a result it is only natural for us to comfort ourselves by saying, "Oh well they got [blank] because they went to a nicer school." or "They have [blank] because their parents have nicer jobs." so on and so forth. (Sorry those were terrible examples I know).
ReplyDeleteI agree with your discussion about bikes, pedestrian and cars. The way that I commute in general is by walking or riding a bike and we have a big risk of getting hit by a car. So yes, I would agree that bikes and pedestrians should have the right of way versus cars since they are dangerous.
