Privilege is something we all experience everyday despite our race, ethnicity, or gender in some way shape or form we all are influenced by privilege. I think the video gave a great analogy of this and I loved the way it said the people in the front rarely complained about their advantage because when comparing that to real life situations, it's true. However, some may feel anger towards those that receive privilege but in society everyone has privilege just in different areas. For example, "white" people are seen as having privilege within the work force but minorities are portrayed as having the most privilege in scholarships, grants, donations, etc. The article I chose to read and discuss is in honor of yesterdays "Equal Pay Day." As a major advocate for equality and as a secret feminist I feel that this issue should not be one still in existence today (I mean Jesus Christ is this the 21st century or not?) In the article and video I attached a link too they talk about many facts involving women in the workplace. Such as: Women make 78 cents to every dollar a man makes. Also, women make up 47% of the U.S. workforce but they also make up over half of the workers making minimum wage or below. And, women make up 53% of entry level employees but only 19% of C-level suite executives. Lastly, America is one of the only countries that does not mandate paid maternity leave. Privilege plays a huge role in this issue that effects all of the women in America. Our society places an importance on men in the workplace and less so on women in the workplace (even though it shouldn't make a difference). This article and these facts is an example of how men have privilege in the workplace, as oppose to women.

Savannah,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I agree with you, there are so many ways someone can be looked at as having privilege. I'm so glad that you touched on gender. In my woman in politics class I'm taking this semester it highly emphasizes how the U.S. is the worst at providing woman with equal pay and maternity benefits. Our country provides the least opportunity for paid time off for a mother who just gave birth.
Savannah, I definitely loved this video because it is something that is a huge issue still. Women of color and "queer sexuality" are the lowest paid individuals in the workplace, and I don't get it. We are all human. We are all allowed the same right to equal pay. Great video!
