Hello everyone!
A first-year student's experience is greatly impacted by a peer mentor because the mentor is a support pillar and connection to the university.
My strengths include my active listening skills, my empathy and my experiences that I have had here at NAU. When I say my experiences I mean my involvement with many organizations, my role as a Resident Assistant and being a leader on a campus that I have loved from the start.
I need to improve upon my listening skills because I feel as though these can always improve. I also need to improve upon my procrastination problem since I have learned just how difficult it can be to balance many commitments and not fall behind.
As a peer mentor I see myself struggling to not help people when they do not want it. As an RA I have learned that as much as I want to help everyone, not everyone wants my help and they prefer their own space and time. I have been practicing this with my residents and, while it has been rough, I think I am improving.
From me, my mentees will gain new-found knowledge of campus resources and involvement, an empathetic listener and a helping hand. I hope that I am able to make an impact in mentees first year experience and create as many bonds as I can.
I love the title of your post...I wish I was that creative! I feel like I can relate to you with the trait that you can improve on. Being able to relate and listen to other people is such a great quality to have, but not everyone else is open to sharing about their personal life. It is important to have a good balance!
