1- Why not be a mentor? It's great!

The rewarding role of a peer mentor is to help your students succeed. Not just academically, but to also see them succeed socially and to help them reach personal goals because as a college student, you constantly work towards these factors. They need guidance from someone to help them figure out what they need to know. Helping them out personally or leading them to a resource is what will help them tremendously, especially when one is new to this large campus.

My strengths as a peer mentor are listening, finding resources, and quickly solving problems. Students come to you for guidance and help, and I think I have done an excellent job in doing so. The most wonderful feeling comes from a "thank you" from one of your mentees. Some things that I may need to improve on are remembering more specific details from previous meetings and to get more organized in my group meetings.

  1. Hi Ana!
I am too a problem solver!! Having that trait can be great and overwhelming. My family members tend to come to me to help them with anything and everything. I don't mind except during mid-terms or finals. I believe every problem has a solution and it takes speaking with someone to help you see something a different way.

  2. I completely agree with your idea as a role of a Peer Mentor. As your student right now I feel like the qualities you listed above are very true about your character and I think you have done a wonderful job as my Mentor. I believe that it is very important to be there as a guide to them and be able to connect with them like a friend but also hve that connection with them where they feel comfortable to talk to you. I believe making sure that you are actively listening to them but also having those resources to give them is very beneficial. We aren't always going to know the answers to everything so having those resources to help guide them in the right direction is a great idea! I also am great at quickly solving problems too! I do agree it can be overwhelming at times but again having those resources and being able to guide and give them advice is a huge key factor to being a successful Peer Mentor.

  3. Ana,

It is super cool that you had a student grow from you and will now be a peer mentor. That means you did a fantastic job! I, also knowing you, think you do hold these characteristics that make you a great peer mentor/campus leader. I am excited to work with you this semester and get to know you further in a different capacity!

  4. Hey Ana, I also find it super hard to remember specific details of past meetings with students! I think I may try to write down notes of what discuss with them during meetings to fix this problem. Coming to terms with not always knowing the answer may be a struggle for me but I guess that's why we have so many references :)
