1. I feel like I most relate to the learning coach role. This is because I always want people to be their best and try to help them with their goals on how to do that. The learning coach was described in the article as helping students to identify their strengths to achieve their potential. It also mentions the focus on the student in their classes and how to succeed academically which is what I would focus on most because I want my students to be successful here at NAU. I definitely feel like I am most like the learning coach.
2. The risks that come with my role is that everyone has a different limit that they can be in a sense pushed to do their best. Identifying everyone's perspective towards how much they want to work verses how much they need to work versus how much I want them to work will be difficult.
3. I think professionalism, being relate-able, and being knowledgeable are the three different skills that are of up-most importance. Being able to set boundaries with your students, talking about appropriate subjects and speaking appropriately are all important to professionalism. You want to create a beneficial relationship using professionalism otherwise, the student might not respect you as much. Being relate able is a big topic because it helps with students being able to trust you, feel comfortable coming to you for a problem and even them looking up to you. It can help build the relationship and create respect towards one another. Being knowledgeable about what NAU has to offer is a must because you want to be able to present opportunities to your students or refer them places if they need help that you can not provide.
I hadn't thought of the risk that probably it'll make things worse if we push mentees too much but I totally agree with it. I am also afraid of that because what if instead of facilitating their lives we're making them stress even more? I also agree with your three most important values especially with being able to relate with them. That's a crucial skill in order for them to trust and open up to you.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with your important values. I like how you linked relatable-ness to trust because both are important for good communication, along with being knowledgeable and knowing how to get them resources like you said. I also agree with the risks. My peer mentor this year pushed a little too much for me and the beginning and shes fixed it now, it was a problem for communication in the beginning. I'm glad you recognized that one and brought it up.
