1-Me as a Peer Mentor

A peer mentor will help support and guide students through their first year. They are peers who have gone through similar experiences and might now how to handle problems the student's might face. I am really good at talking to people and finding solutions to problems. I am easy to talk to and a pretty decent listener. I am good at guiding people to find their own answers rather than telling them how to do things. Socially interacting with people when I first meet them is a challenge full of anxiety and is physically and mentally draining, but after the first experience I  can figure out who people are and better handle conversations. I am also a quiet, laid back leader which can cause people with bigger personalities than me to push me over and ignore my say on things and I need to be more assertive so that incidents like that don't happen. Being that kind of leader is also a good thing. It can help people feel more comfortable and since we are supposed to be helping them with their college experience it is important for them to feel their in control and that the decisions they make are not something their forced into and actually want to do. They can come to their own decisions that are close to the decision I want them to make, and at the end of the day, its their decisions and their experience here that matters.

  1. Tawny, I liked that you mentioned that they are still going to make their own decision but you were going to do your best to sway them in the right direction. Good point!

  2. Girl, I love this! I think it is AMAZING that you recognize that you can take your perceived 'weakness' and turn it into a benefit. Being laid back is sometimes a very welcoming thing, as "bigger personalities" can be overwhelming. Also, a lot of times the best way to learn is to find the answer yourself, instead of being handed the answer. I wish I could be more like you! You're awesome girl.
