1- Peer Mentor

Xitlalic Gonzalez

1. A peer mentor is very significant in a student's first year experience because as a new student, they
are lost. Peer mentors provide resources and help to students. For example, if a student is having trouble academically, peer mentors have resources for them to go to such as tutoring or SI sessions. It's most probable that a student doesn't even know what SI sessions are when first coming to college. I feel that I am strong in areas such as trying to help others and not stopping until I know they are okay or also, I feel that I listen well to what others say. Something I'd like to work on would be on how to be more open minded.

2. I see myself facing challenges with getting used to being a reliable person students can go to for help because I am afraid of not having all the answers to their questions. My students will probably gain the assurance that they do belong at NAU and that they will be successful. Since most students have thoughts of dropping out in their first year, I want to make sure that they are all comfortable in their new home.

  1. I fear the same thing! I know we will try our best to know their answers, if not we can always say that we can find out for them, or direct them to someone who knows. I agree, listening is very important so the students know we care!
