1. The role of a Peer Mentor plays on is, someone who facilitates freshmen students, leads/guides, challenges, provide suggestions and insight to a student's life, and aides in anyway they can.
2. Some of my strengths are active listening, I try my best at relating to students' issues, dedicate to help the students in anyway I can, and have an open mind & an open heart.
3. I would like to improve on the structure of my individual and group meetings, not making my mentees problems my problems but still being there for them, focusing in more on what they need or what they are going through by the words the use (I feel, I am frustrated).
4. The challenges I may face are getting a new group of mentees and not being able to connect to them, dealing with new issues I have not experienced yet, and finding a balance between my work, school, and personal life.
5. I hope my mentees will gain a sense of safety, comfort, understanding, acceptance, and being able to just be themselves around me.
You seem like a fun and exciting person that can easily engage students with even the dullest of topics. Hearing you talk about the connections you feel with your students and struggling with that line of professionalism and friendship is nice because I know that this is an issue many of us will face as peer mentors. I really hope to build good connections with all of my students so they always feel like they have someone to talk to when the going gets tough but I know I also need to decide where the line is. Also, I definitely feel you on trying to find a balance between work, school, and personal life. My schedule is so jam packed and being a mentor will be a second job for me so this is also something I know I will be struggling with next semester, at least I'm not in it alone!
