What do you see your role as a peer mentor? What do you feel are some of your strengths? What do you feel are some areas you may need to improve in?
As a peer mentor, I see myself being a role model for other students. By saying this, I do not necessarily mean a leader or a "head" position, but rather someone that other students can view as a friend or guide to help them through their time at NAU. Many times students, even myself, can get caught up in the stress of it all (e.g., class and extra-curricular activities), and forget why they are in college and why the stress is worth it all. If I can be an aid in helping students reach their goals and create a relationship with each one of them, I will have succeeded in my role as a mentor.
A strength of mine, in regards to being a mentor, is that I am an amazing listener. When people are talking to me, I don't just hear them, I listen to them. I am very good at taking in information and processing what is said. This allows me to be active in the conversations, and an aid to those who are seeking my assistance. Also, I am strong in relation to taking on multiple tasks and organizing them into appropriate order. In other words, time management and organization. I can have a "full plate" of things to do, and get them done when they need to be done.
My weaknesses regarding this mentoring position is going to be my "perfect" mentality. Many times I find myself stressing over the imperfections instead of enjoying the positives. An example include an activity with the students I will be working with. If things do not go as planned, I may dwell on the "could haves". However, this is why it will be an amazing experience for both the students and myself. I will learn to enjoy the success of the days, while they take benefit from coming to the sessions.
I agree on your goal of being a peer mentor, I want to be a role model as well! I also feel that I'm a good listener. When I find myself stressing out about all the things I got to accomplish, I manage to get them done and on time so I see what you're saying. (:
ReplyDeleteI can completely relate to you on getting caught up in the stress. There are times that I find myself worked up over grades and getting things done for the organizations that I am a part of that I forget why it is important to me. Many times we as students only think about these 4 years in college but we don’t think about how the experiences that we gain will affect us in the future. Going to workshops and conferences may not always build you as a student but it will strengthen you as an individual and let you stand out when you look for a job. This job will allow us to help the students we mentor and make them realize that their goals go beyond these 4 years.
