How do you see your role as a peer mentor? What do you feel are some of your strengths and what do you feel are some areas where you may need to improve in?
Being a peer mentor to me is providing support and knowledge. A peer mentor is the person you can go to wish questions and concerns. I want to let others know that I am there to help. I will provide them with resources and advise that will benefit them. Peer mentoring is focusing on the individual who is being mentored.
Some of my strengths that make me a good peer mentor are being a great listener, being organized, and being able to relate. I enjoy giving back to others and listening to their stories. It gives me insight into their world. No matter how old someone is I find that you can always learn from someone, whether it is from their failures or their successes, that person has lived a different life than I have. Learning different stories opens my mind up to what is out there in the world, which also makes me able to relate to others. I am an extremely organized person, I love having everything planned out especially my weekly schedule.
There is always room for improvement in everything I do, I am not perfect but I strive to do my best. I would like to improve on my communication skills. I sometimes find it difficult to speak in front of crowds. Speaking eloquently is one thing I want to accomplish before I graduate and being in this program will definitely improve my public speaking skills.
Hello Julia!
ReplyDeleteI really like that you talked about how you can learn from everyone! As an RA, I have enjoyed learning everyday tips and tricks from my residents and I am excited to keep learning from mentees next year.
I would love to learn how your organization system is set up! I am still trying to figure out my own system and I may be able to use aspects of yours..
Hi Julia,
ReplyDeleteI love that you want to improve your communication skills and public speaking skills because you will definitely get a lot of practice! I also wanted to improve my public speaking skills and with the group meetings that you do every week you will see yourself improve. Also, every student that you will work with will have a different story. This is great since that is something you enjoy.
If you are ever stuck in a situation not knowing what to say or do, you can always go to one of your coworkers or talk with your supervisor.
