I want my students to see me as a resource. I want them to come to me if they are having problems and if they are having difficulties finding answers. As a peer mentor, I want to be able to open them to the opportunities NAU has to offer and provide them with strategies to help them be successful in college. Also, I want the tools I provide them with to be useful not only throughout their educational career, but for different aspects of their life as well.
What are your strengths?
I think I am knowledgeable with how to succeed academically in college. If my students are having issues in classes, I can definitely be the one to support them, and give them that extra push they need. Also, I can direct them to the place they need to go in order to assist them academically.
What are your areas of improvement?
I need to be more knowledgeable about my role as a peer mentor and what lines need to be drawn. For example, how close of a "friendship" are we allowed to have with a student, without it being considered unprofessional. Overall, I need to be more informed about my part in this process and what I can do to have my students be the best they can be.
Celena great way to put it; serving as a resource. That sounds a lot better than role model. As for your areas of improvement I feel the same way. Almost like a mother being more of a "friend" than a "parent."
ReplyDeleteI think that it is very important to give students resources and tools to help them succeed in college but also to be prepared for the real world. I think that it is important to have a friendship for the students and be there for them and ask them about their weekend or celebrate an event but I don't know what would be considered unprofessional after that and is a good question to find out about.
